alright i gotta say, if there's anything in this series that bothers me it's the lack of ingenuity on part of the witches. They've clearly been around for a while but none have tried to test the limits of their powers? train it? none have ever exhausted themselves by accident and noticed the awakening was less painful? it feel like when it comes to this, the author makes the witches too conveniently dumb so it works in the mc's favor as their savior.
Other then that i like this quite a bit but I just have a hard time looking past stuff like 'I've only been using my oh so special and unique powers for laundry and never thought to train it to control it better'

@Hamin Not wrong, but I think the explanation is reasonable enough to suspend disbelief.
Namely, the witches are being hunted and suppressed like crazy, so every time they use magic risks exposing them and costing them their lives. If they're out in the wilderness, then it's the problem of constantly being on the move to avoid being caught by hunting parties. Because of that, only witches with very useful powers like Nightingale get the chance to practice.
Also, there's the propaganda aspect to it, but that's hit or miss since they're against the church anyway. Point is that the truth is being actively withheld and twisted.

The witch society from the past knew of this (Roland will eventually rescue a witch from the past later on)
The higher ups of the Church knew of this (the Church was in fact started by some survivors of said witch society to make preparation for a doomsday event, though over time humans usurped power and very few people are aware of the truth)
Roland's little sister, a witch herself, also noticed this and was using this info to gather witches. In fact her 'envoy' was planning to use this info as bait to take the witches away from Roland but since they already knew it that doesn't work.

When would they have time to practice when they have to hide their powers so they aren't murdered/are told the powers will eat them alive? Also, they're not nobles most of them, so they're uneducated and malnourished, which stunts mental development. This is why peasants are only really good as beasts of burden, typically speaking. So ingenuity would be an almost new concept to most people outside of the circles of the wealthy. They die off in droves due to temperature and attacks from the wild, which means they hadn't thought previously of how to prevent such things. Witches are drawn from this stock largely, I'd imagine. Simplefolk.
