Let me guess they have all the witches they claimed to "executive" or something in there and are using them as a source of power or to make weapons, while telling the rest of the world that witches are bad to monopolize the power for themselves or something.
This is an afterthought but it could also be reincarnatos instead of witches or maybe both

The first part shows up in the novel, but, as I remember in the translation I read, there were boys and girls in the carriage and the ambassador was selling the boys.

And apparently never will a manga be made where the holy guys are actually good, holy, and strong. They're either weak and useless but good, or they're powerful, arrogant, and secretly SUPER fucking evil. Every goddamn time. Have to be saved/destroyed by rebellious MCs wielding dark powers or straight up demons. It's getting old.

Jeeez, more shit about this church? I'd really rather have them keep up with the CURRENT issues instead. Like winter, the ship they are building, the main characters siblings, ect. They already introduced the church, putting in more info as them being bad guys when there are still half a dozen other main plot points going on is just annoying. Finish one first before starting another. They were doing so good on that the last few chapters.

The more this "Church" is shown, the more I want them wiped the face of the map. They use God as an excuse to do things? All the more reason to put a bullet in their heads

For people talking about the Church as evil (spoiler of a much later info)
You're partly correct.
In truth, the Church was started by witches who were survivor of the witch society that lived in much larger area but lost a war and the survivors escaped to this place (their servants went on to become founders of the 4 kingdoms)
Their goal was to basically gathered witches and turned them into Space Marines in a sense, to make the 'useless' non-combat witches into something combat-capable.
A body capable of nullifying magic and trained in combat, with the soul of the sacrificed witches who'll spend the years in preparation for the upcoming war against the Demons that drove them out (yes, the same demons that rekt'd Cara) because if they lose the next war, humanity will go extinct.
Basically it's one of those "The End Justify The Means" plan.
However, over time the successors to the church forgot their original plan, even forgetting that you're supposed to put the souls of the sacrificed witches into the body.
So instead of Space Marines, all they got was a very very strong and obedient zombies.
And of course many of the new human in charge are corrupted/greedy so the situation turn into what it is.
On the 'plus' side, the current Pope actually is trying to get a witch to be his successor, who'll direct the church to its original goal: formation of the immortal army for the war.
Eventually, they lose to Roland, and so the plan was scrapped and the remainders of people who's focused on the upcoming war join Roland's side one way or another (the corrupted members ran off into hiding)

except that all of that including the church stuff is all going to meet up and lead to something else in the future so it's necessary to know.
also after the current arc and the next is done, it's going to be a full arc about the church so get used to it.
and also depending on how you see things, you could actually consider the Church as one of the "good guys", even if they use deplorable means to get what they want.
