I like how her being younger and a year old made her all confident in herself to the point where she would teach MC things, but because it was all elementary and because she never grew out of that smug, over-confident mindset, she soon fell just stopped evolving mentally.

Which, makes MC, who looked up to her, shatter his understanding of her but when he says something remotely inspiring, it brings back her motivation

I dunno why this is a .5 chapter, we finally get a real hint as to why Todome acts the way she does: she wants to continue earning the MC's admiration that comes from her being a responsible senpai to him. She goes about it in the dumbest way possible cause that's her character. Whenever she does get any of that, she actually takes the MC's advice and starts studying, even though she's really bad at it.

So yeah, I think part of her genuinely does like him and wants to be with him (childhood friends and all), and part of her just enjoys being a responsible senpai to the point where she never got any smarter.
