He went from grief and anger about his son's death to forgetting his son and focusing on getting back the sword to satisfaction about getting a sword as if it's some accomplishment even though it was theirs to begin with and they had to pay for it

What did he do to the sword? The only way I can see him giving away such a thing at a loss is if he already got everything from the sword that he could, rendering it useless.
