"We didn't know at the time what was terrible stuff was going to happen to us" is the absolute worst narration device and it needs to be put out of its misery. Just do the terrible shit to your characters without this garbage, and stop faking out that terrible shit is going to happen with this piece of narration and then showing us that you were just exaggerating for comedic effect later while we're at it since that's getting to be just as bad.

Agreed, the "We didn't know at the time what was terrible stuff was going to happen to us" trope is the worst. This kind of forewarning only stresses out the reader for no reason or benefit, specially when the terrible stuff won't get published in the magazine till months or a year later.
