Well the small dog kin are more like talking dogs while the big once are beast-kins.
Its likelly that the small kin can be used the same way a normal dog can.
They would be considerably smarter and easier to train because they can actually talk, so in a hunter / gatherer society they could be invaluable.
They are thought of as trouble because they don't have the fine motor skills humanity have becouse off our hands, but a 4 legged dog have meny other talents and abilities we dont.
If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Well yeah, but I still don't see it being as valuable as larger beastkin.
And from the description they don't seem too intelligent if they are driven mostly by instinct.

they said their personality is based on instinct witch would indicate they are possibly less intelligent, than i dont deny.
However consider that they could understand the meaning on what was discussed and made a collective decision to migrate for a better future.
This proves that :
1: they have the ability to at least understand people speaking to a greater degree, and even a normal animal that dont can be trained to be a effective aid.
2: the fact they could understand the benefits and make a collective decision proves that they are able to plan for the future and that in itself is a big benchmark of intelligence, so while its possible they are not as intelligent as humans, they are FAR more intelligent than normal animals as even the smartest once only superficially understand languages.
but yeah, this is a speculation based on probability at most, we would have to actually see the doggies to be sure.

Too many people are getting caught up in modern morality reading this. The setting is basically medieval and they live in a place with no water sanitation available, in the real medieval era it wasn't that weird for everyone to drink weak beer since clean water was hard to get, even children drank it once they were weened off.
@RunicEX Yeah true, I guess I zoned out at the end there. He still failed tho, thankfully granny stepped up. He still needs to have more backbone with Aruna though and not just go blank whenever she mentions their potential future marriage.
@DSkyline The issue is the way Aruna talks about alcohol. She talks like she is an 70 year old alcoholic with that dumbass face on page 31 and when the granny scolds her for wanting to open the barrel now so she could drink MORE since she doesn't want to share with the dog people.

@DSkyline it kinda looks like they were weened with booze if the infant being given milk beer is any indication. It's probably more biological than cultural if Diaz's knee jerk reaction is to exclaim that doing such a thing was "dangerous" rather than "wrong". Either that or the setting's human culture doesn't have booze weak enough to safely give to children.

Man i just love the world building of this manga. The author could have so easily taken the easy route and go for elves, dwarves, orcs, and demi humans who are just girls with animal ears, but instead of that there's this bunch of curious races with their own costumes and traditions.
