@Haraken From prince Richard's story it seemed mostly like the king was generally well-meaning and kind, but hopelessly incompetent. This would of course hurts his authority and have the secondary effect of his heirs not being raised properly so they are vulnerable to manipulation, but without knowing more about the kingdom the lack of authority seems to be an effect rather than the cause.
