well from looking at the first chapter.

His students were taken hostage and they used a child to kill him.
So I'm guess they used the hostages to restrict him and then the child to stop him from resisting death when it came for him. Perhaps they knew he had a soft spot for kids.
It's pretty screwed up way to kill a person to be honest.

but then when you think about it, how else would they have done? Look at that last fight he had with the demon. They used his weakness for his students and children because attacking him from where is strong wouldn't work.

I was wondering because apparently he didn't just die without fighting as his youkai were killed( i think it means he summoned them), so it implies he was resisting. I just can't understand why, if he was fighting half-heartedly against that child, he had to summon and get his youkai killed.

Theory vs. usage.

In theory, dark magic should be superior....but you have to account control difficulty, mana usage and the spell effects.
Like how water should be stronger than fire, but if the biggest, hottest fire spell is cheap and easy to control while the best water spell to counter it is expensive and hard to control....fire would be from a practical stance superior to water.

I'm kinda hoping to see MC meet his other familiars if possible or like deities he was protected under in his previous life, that would be fun! Like maybe the deities are linked to both world somehow but the ways of worshiping them and using their powers/blessings is different between the worlds. I'm not liking how rude the hero is but I can't remember her backstory so maybe she's just not open? idk still too soon to tell.
