Saikyou Yuusha wa Oharai Hako: Maou ni Nattara Zutto Ore no Musou Return - Vol. 1 Ch. 3 - The Hero Saves His Comrades

@boag

You are right of course. There are so many isekai in a fantasy setting, that my brain naturally thought "fantasy setting = isekai". My bad.

while I am glad that he's not an op god-like existence but tbh he seems like...way too weak as well as one with a way too low stamina for a "hero" who should have already defeated the Demon Lord. well, if the Demon Lord is weak it would make some sense but then once again... would a hero be actually needed when you can get double the amount of those mercenaries that shaved MC's stamina by...umm being slaughtered by the hero? which resulted in making the hero end up fainting... and use them to make Demon Lord stamina run out and finish him off :v

@Adden : his ability is using gear to its utmost, it was the hero gear that was OP, not him directly.
Using a different weapon could easily be draining him much faster then the hero gear did.

I was hoping that he purposely pretended to be out of stamina for 2 merc guys before the last one, but alas, the MC's not THAT clever. Worked out nicely against the last one though, who didn't want to get caught in the same trap but should have bum rushed.

I actually think that leaving the soldiers alive was a good strategy. Putting aside the Japanese no-killing trope, wounding enemy soldiers and stealing their supplies is a great way to slow down an army unit, as not only do they have to resupply like was said, but having to care for their wounded means they either slow down or split up. In addition, if there are people left alive, they can tell cautionary stories that will also help prevent rapid advancement into unknown territory.

This wouldn't have worked with the mercs though, because no merc is gonna risk his neck to go find out who wiped out an entire company without some serious pay or insurance, and that group was probably the entire group. Better off killing them all.
