I still think this whole idol nonsense would make more sense if she was shown to be treated like one. There's never been huge signs with her name, cheer groups, banner bearers. Nor has there even been any real issue with her being out in public.
So the whole idol mentality everyone, in the story, is putting on her is awkward and feels kinda shoehorned in for drama.

@Vasqueztion I fully agree, but at the same time, it kinda makes sense: she's basically that small-town high school quarterback the local paper tries to hype up into the next all star player, but nobody really gives a shit outside of like half a dozen people; in this case, those people just happen to be a government official and her principal. I'm also of the opinion that this arc is little more than a thinly veiled jab at the way idols are treated in Japan. Probably not really the most relevant, considering this is about high school boxing, but it again kinda makes sense.

I think the quarterback metaphor falls short specifically when it comes to the idea of having a significant other.
Idols, on the other hand, their 'purity' is, like, 40% of their image. And the mayor and the principal are acting as managers- who are strongly impacted by that purity being tainted.
Which makes it so misplaced, since she's not treated like an idol would. They show no signs of money coming in or the other "tropes", if you will, that come along with idols. It's like they forgot about those parts and solely focused on the aspect of boxing. Which is fine, mind, but when drama like this appears and she's forced to be suspended from the boxing club because of it- the lack of presence becomes glaring.

@Vasqueztion I don’t get how this drama was shoe horned. Since the first 10 or so chapters they eluded to this very heavily in fact, and it was the main reason why they had to keep their relationship quiet. Even the principal and mayor had conversations with Saotome that she needs to focus on boxing and not bother with boyfriends as it will ruin her image. It’s just that the author chose to bring it out now as a form of being “outed”.

@firefox1234 That and it's simply incorrect to say she's not depicted as such. We've seen the principal and mayor discussing how they will be pushing her as a mascot and they pop in to ruin scenes about to drag her off to meet city officials and such from time to time. That stuff is happening but it's off panel mostly- but we have seen her being forced into photo-ops and interviews, the principal brought in a TV crew to film a sham of a documentary; as well as promotion with the local police, complete with her in costume to go along with it. So she has been depicted as being treated as such and like you say, the fact she is being used as a local mascot has been looming over the premise since the beginning of the series.

It's just not been wasting page space constantly depicting it as all that really needs to be said is a reminder here and there that's happening- which we get every time the principal or mayor shows up.

So how impressive it is supposed to be that Satoru managed to outrun the little brother? Outrunning a bike that had a bit of an early start seems like a lot to me but I'm a fatso so I wouldn't tell if that puts Satoru above someone of average stamina/speed/whatever or if anyone could do that.

@ichi24 Would have to be their parents to do the suing. Children/Adolescent rights in Japan are pretty....awkward. Not that other countries, the US included, don't have issues with them as well.

What Satoru did was akin to Little Mac outrunning Doc. So yeah, we're seeing the birth of the third-generation Ippo right now.
