I would have liked that the curse started as a timeless sealed evil in the area leaking out, but this backstory is reasonably tidy also.

I hope the mom fucking DENIES Suzuki though.

And do all boys who are wooed by the mermaid curse turn out like Takaaki?

I'm not that satisfied with this origin story either. Could use some more fleshing out really. It just kinda happened.

Unfortunately we don't know if all boys end up like Takaaki since his is the only mermaid-sponsored relationship we've seen. So we don't know if him knowing about the mermaids made him an overpassionate creep.

Part of me wondered whether if the boy knowing about the curse made it ineffective against him, and that Takaaki was just playing along with the story to protect Shinobu from harm.

But now I'm pretty sure he's possessed and may be a rapist.

I dont think it's that Takaaki's possessed, he's aware Saya forced him to love against his will (which is arguably equivalent to rape).

If he could feel anything else, it would be hate for Saya, but he can only feel love for her. So the best he can do is make the love overbearing and force it on her in order to express the hate he would have actually felt for what she did to him otherwise.
