Its revealed later that rio's parents excelled at spirit arts. The country they ran from due to some political bullshit, practiced spirit arts and not magic.
Infact you will be surprised when this series reveals who his parents were. Lets just say he has a very dotting grandfather who is VERY VERY powerful somewhere far far away.

Alma had a competition with RIO because of an argument which was surped when someone asked who the strongest was in the village, which they agree'd it was Alma, and Latifa innocently went "no one is stronger then Onichan", which made them Alma who is a battle junkie compete.
He basically wiped the floor off her going full power, already making her realize that Rio definitely went easy, and it could of gotten really bad had he went all out.

@aigomorla In that case, they did change the order. It hasn't happened yet in the manga. The only time the two fought so far was when they ambushed him, and he was protecting the sleeping Latifa.

It was actually one of the funniest moments in this entire arc, because of how innocent Latifa threw it out.
