Titanium is absolute shit at edge retention. There's a reason why it's basically only used in dive knives for knives - it's corrosion proof to seawater and, for underwater demonlitions, it's non-magnetic. That's it. There's a reason why metallurgists developed steels with vanadium in them for knives. Even then, you have the issues of vanadium carbide ripping out of the steel matrix - which would only be worse in a titanium knife.

Seriously, titanium is overrated as hell. Titanium is only better when you add the caveat "...lighter for the same amount of material." That's where titanium benefits. Considering that for cutlery you're getting shit-for-all for weight saving, that's not much of an improvement.

@definitionofinsanity That's why it's a metal alloy that he used. Beta titanium alloy isn't the same as just pure titanium. The reason it's not used often by average people is the high cost. A problem MC doesn't have here because magic.

Titanium is shit regardless of the alloy for knives. You have the issue of vanadium carbide tear-out with steel, for fuck's sake, which has much, much higher toughness, hardness and wear resistance than titanium.

Titanium is not an end-all solution. There's a reason why knives and rifling still use steel even if titanium is made for much of the other components. That's because, material science wise, it's just better. Unless, again, you need non-magnetic abilities. Even for advanced corrosion proof (not just resistance), titanium is no longer the best option. Spyderco and... whatever company that made it that I can't remember, introduced nitrogen-based H-1 steel. Which, while still a steel, is no where good as regular stainless/carbon/tool steel but it still beats the pants off any titanium alloy for edge retention. Best part is that it is work-hardened which means sharpening and serrations actually make the steel harder.

But, seriously. Again. Titanium is not a magic bullet. It does serve as the magic solution to material science problems. It is often WORSE than other alternatives... but is one of the best metals for a COMPROMISE. Case in point: Steel would've been a better metallurgic use in the SR-71 to deal with heat and thermal expansion... except that it would've been too heavy to fly, then. Which is why titanium was used. And the only reason it was used. Not because it's magic or better.
