Semelparous - Vol. 1 Ch. 4

Perhaps insanity truly is a necessity to continue to fight on, knowing (part of) the unbelievable dark truth.

...kinda makes you wonder *how* the organisation has actually learned all this. And ofc why the parallel world is trying to invade "this side," never mind now with such baroque methods, was conspicuously not even speculated upon in the conversation...

This outfit might want to review their curriculum for the mental conditioning of trainee Bastioners tho, given actual militaries don't really have much trouble getting soldiers shoot other people dead.

There's a pretty humongous difference between killing someone who, given the opportunity, would very likely kill you with extreme prejudice, and killing an innocent non-combatant. I'm pretty sure even the most hardened Special Operations vet would have a hard time pulling the trigger if they knew that some civilian back home was going to die in accordance with each enemy they killed.

That's not to say there aren't some proportion of completely sociopathic soldiers in any military that wouldn't be phased by the thought, but then again there are sociopaths in nearly every walk of life.

@NoCoolNames13 Reminder that as far as we know the methodology of the Kaijuu is literally "break through into populated areas, commit mass murder."

Not really hard to see where the necessary psychological conditioning would start from...

I like Youko, she really has a good reason to keep fighting. I wonder if Yorino will keep asking for info of each person she kills, that might either keep her sanity or drive her more insane.

P17/18 > Remember don't stick your dick in crazy. But itz lez! So it's ok.
Captain, why do you keep on fighting? >>>> That's because I've already gone insane...[putting it out there with a smile]
And we are in the greater good morality territory. What are a few if it saves the many.
Now that meant nothing. At least they are together in their slumber.

But just a little question. You have to kill the Kaijuu controller by going through the "eye" so when you split the shit out of the head, how do you not become aware of the controller after your first fight. How can you put up half a year or more and don't see shit.

killed her own sister huh... welp

Misery loves company. These two are broken to the core but if yuri magic can help them mend each other a little, that's all I can ask for.

@Airwave2k2 Not to mention that not everyone is going to be able to score a "clean" one-shot kill all the time - there's bound to be no shortage of cases where the Bastioners basically just hack the head apart to get at the "core".

And good luck getting all the ones who quit in disgust and outrage (over having essentially been lied to about a pretty fucking important detail if nothing else) stay quiet about the whole thing...

How edgy.

I'd kinda like to read a story like this once where the protagonist says "fuck this" and goes do their own thing and deal with the consequences. But Japanese media are probably the wrong place to hope for that.

@RNDM1 Yeah maybe it is because of those strong astral queen bodies, who make the head split like Moses split the red sea. And for the rest of Bastioner it is more a Hack and Slay adventure until they rip a "human body" out of the coconut and go ape shit over what they see. But then again being not as clean, why don't they encounter this confidential topic not earlier. In the setting Yorino get to see it in the 7th fight. And she is if we have to guess more surgical by splitting the Kaijuu comand center.

And on a side note. Thinking about this chapter. Sloppy job author-san for no longer giving the Kaijuus classification.

@Airwave2k2 Only real explanation I can think of is, if you're not good enough to do get a clean hit on one of the kaijuus, you just end up dead. If you are good enough, you inevitably figure out the truth, and, if you are good enough, you've killed enough kaijuus to realize you're a mass murderer now. If THAT doesn't turn you insane, and make you go into full "Fuck it" mode like our MC here, it will send you into disgusting levels of depression/self-loathing maybe even suicide and/or Shame to a point of not wanting to ever kill anything again, and not wanting anyone to ever find out about what you did.

If some of the Bastioners that found out about the truth couldn't take it and left, how is it that the truth hasn't been made public yet? Pretty sure there a lot more cover-ups going on in the background.

@Potatogod I don't think the public is even aware there's an extra dimensional war going on period. It's pretty easy to write off a rogue Bastioner as a nut job and carry on.

@Tromend "If you are good enough, you inevitably figure out the truth, and, if you are good enough, you've killed enough kaijuus to realize you're a mass murderer now." - Well mass murder is a strong term for a soldier who is just doing the job protecting the city below them and kill enemy combatants. This "link" thing is just unfortunate.
Also if your relative gets killed because of these Monsters are linked with em, you have growing ground for revenge, if it would be discussed openly.

Anyhow when Haruka was killed, is their a chance that her doubleganger in the outer world wouldn't die? It is established that in "our world" someone will drop dead through astral body share, when the Kaijuu is executed. But is it the same to in the "other world", or is there a chance of reunion.

All cuttings over all chapters so far excluding the sloppy job

When Yorino split the Kaijuu clean in the middle she should had seen the controller even before this episode.

@Tromend That's silly talk. Staying alive against the Kaijuu is a matter of reflexes, mobility and evasion which are a wholly different skillset from being able to get in those 1HKO head cleaves. Plus even the Bastioners who *can* pull off the latter clearly tend to prefer first compromising the big lugs' offensive ability by literally disarming them; bet your arse the lesser lights make a point of crippling the things before going for the kill out of obvious safety considerations.

Lions and hyenas don't attack Cape buffalo from the horn end either, that'd just be suicidally stupid and removes you from the gene pool real quick.
