@Polarobear haha, low key, in my other life, I used to do research on intimate partner violence/abuse. Usually threatening to hurt themselves is a manipulation tactic through and through. However, sometimes people will hurt themselves (not to the point of actually ending their lives) just to push that farther or “convince” the other person that they’ll do it.

Of course sometimes people kill themselves, but in general the threat is usually used to get someone to stay in a relationship. Unsurprisingly, people who do those sorts of things also usually engage in other types of abuse.
