True, but this wasn't really known until recently. Neanderthal extinction also can't be exclusively explained by interbreeding with modern humans, as there were clearly other factors in play that resulted in their rapid population decline.

For anyone interested in learning more about Neanderthals, Paabo's book on his team's journey working with their DNA is fantastic. I'd highly recommend it.
