Its OK to announce that she picked him because he was handsome publicly, but it makes more sense to privately confess that she wanted to give him a chance to move up in the world just like her. It would establish both her naivete and her good-girl personality, plus her excuse was suspicious AF. There's a limit to how shallow someone can be, after all, and it would make more sense to let her enemies glimpse more of her "real personality" beyond her love of status.
