This chapter kinda freaks me out. The living dolls completely lose their personalities when they're serving as their shadow's faces.

i figured kate was ok with the whole screwed up system but the ending of this chapter makes me wonder whether she's trying to rebel against it in secret? teaching emily to care about her personal belongings and physical safety seems like the opposite of what you'd want from a "face". Also its not totally clear but it sounded like not only the servants, but also the shadows are at risk of being disposed of if they don't meet certain expectations

I wonder if once they settle down and get married do the shadows have to marry and settle down with the shadow of the partner??
