A question comes to mind after rereading this chapter: Did the Mia doll Sara destroyed have one of Kate's sootmen inside it? Sara is said to be very possessive and I can totally see her covering an area with soot after finding another shadow's soot near Mia. Similar to a dog spraying all around after discovering the mark of another dog inside its territory.
