If you read the subtext of the narrative so far, I think you would agree with me that yes, there is a tragic backstory. In my eyes, this half-chapter in particular did some significant worldbuilding.

I don't think this guy is affiliated with the Guild itself since when his title showed up it didn't mention the guild at all. So I guess technically he could justify his actions as legal since he's just "giving a fetch quest" to an adventurer.
Plus I don't think he intends for our MC to die since he just expects him to give up upon seeing how strong the Kraken is and not actually try and fight it. Though why he has it our for our MC remains to be seen.
