This is something that actually happens all the time in the real world. There have been cases of covid deniers claiming it does not exist and is a hoax while they were in the hospital dying from the disease. You see the same levels of stuborn idiocy and wilful ignorance from all kinds if idiots like flat-earthers, antivaxers, etc. The world is so full of people who ignore the facts in front of them in favor of their pre-concieved "truths" it is not funny.

It is so common that simply put there is no need to explain this established idiots stupidity since if you deny that someone could just be like that you are notpauing attention to the world around you.

If the idiot was instead portrayed as a genius then it would need an explanation, but there are to many examples of this mentality from the population in general for one to be needed for someone of below average intelligence
