Well it was canceled in the very next volume. It's possible that things had to move very fast at this point because the author was told in advance they were getting the axe.

When a manga is rushed, everything ends up falling apart.

@regalia001 I'm currently going through the raws. The artwork has significantly improved IMO, with more depth and detail overall. Also, Mao is older in the new series, so he looks more like a teen than the callow kid he is here.
