Shinju no Nectar - Ch. 49 - The Empire of Beasts

ah yes, medieval middle east with curved sword while in reality it was turk that using curved sword cuz medieval middle east people actually using straight sword

well, nothing new about that

A wealthy city connecting major seas? Surrounded by enemies? Triple-layered walls? Curved swords? My Byzaboo sense is tingling.

Erm.
I think the settings kind of doesn't make sense. The city is in wrong position to act as way station for sea routes and being surrounded by rocky deserts would not make it good entrepôt for inland-sea trade.

Thanks for the chapter!
Guess it will take a while for MC and gang to show up. Really curious for what method will Dhala use to conquer the city? maybe some big drill like when the fire nation tried to take over Ba Sing Se? I say it will be for land because Kai's next transformation will have, most likely, earth powers

At first, I was thinking this chapter would somehow shoehorn Kai's mouth into a beast's breasts. Instead, it's a side character arc that involves former antagonists in a story that happens at the same time as the endless school arc. Filler or not, I am totally up for some side character development. Just a shame that it doesn't involve one of the initial soldiers Kai worked with, like the beast guy (Ren? Something like that). I don't even remember the catgirl's role in the story though, but who cares; she's cute.

Also, the dimorphism for beasts is surprisingly not that huge. Men are humans with animal ears, tails, horns if applicable, and blunt noses. Females are the same, but with normal noses. TECHNICALLY lazy since it's still "Human, but...", but at least it's not the usual nonsense of men looking like monsters while women are generic anime girls. I mean, they are, but still!

Better not to think too much about it. It's evident that Baruara was based on Constantinople/Istanbul, from its layout to its history, including its position as an important trade center, but also combined with an Arabian aesthetic, desert environment and city dwellers vs nomads dichotomy. Even if the combination may not make much sense.

I suppose it could work if the inner sea is bigger than it seems, and leads to more fertile regions, or regions rich in valuable resources. Then Baruara would control the only sea route into them.

Makes you wonder if they could have alternated between the Academy Arc and this one to introduce more variation into the pacing.

Damn, I had forgotten about Cheetara-girl, much less about Gil-galad-notreally.
So... the evil elves (bwa-ha-ha, we're so eeeevil!) are mucking about, and I guess that means more drugs and banging?

@musicfreak12
Dhala (the enemy nation) set up that whole thing at the school to divert attention away from what they really want which involves whats happening now

Tho it does suck that the author went straight here instead of wrapping up the past arc first

Pseudo Ottoman Empire time yhata! (assuming Ottoman over Byzantine given desert Arab flavor and how the current empire took over their capital from a previous fallen empire) Can't wait for the main crew to make it here soon, along with seeing what the climax (pardon the pun 😉) hinted at the end of the previous arc means. I'm gonna guess for now that Dhalla is probably stirring resentment amongst the nomads against the central government of the Empire or something so they can seize the capital/important trade route, especially given they'll be setting up a foothold in a few more days, possibly signaling a full scale invasion. Should be interesting to see how we convince Bunny Beast Girl (Aldia) to switch sides and what her grievances might be that she'd cooperate with Dhalla in the first place. Also kind of ominous the way she and Gil agreed to be enemies under these conditions where it seems likely to be soon so curious about their past as well, and hopefully Kai gets here soon to resolve their issues before things get too crazy. We know Kai needs to add this one to his breast harem as well after all 😛

@Raydnt This chapter is more like a prologue to the upcoming arc. The wrapped up from the previous arc probably will explain later when the main party arrive in this desert country.
