Because poison gas worked so well in WWI.... Also the dumbest idea with magical beings on the battlefield, who can influence the winds...

Poison gas isn't going to work so well against fire. Though fire could help some of the poison gas to spread by creating air currents.

They should be careful, though, because when you use poison gas, you also invite others to use it on yourself. The MC would be in the best position to develop various means of delivery.
