Shiori Experience: jimi na watashi to hen na ojisan - Vol. 9 Ch. 39 - Audition

Mitsuoka is really iron-willed, she doesn't waver even a tiny bit. God I wonder what happened in her past.

I want to know what happened!
I need to know how a girl with such passion became a spartan bitch trainer!

No, that's not how a trumpet works. The note does not depend upon how hard you press down on a key. Ugh.

Also, the idea that someone proficient on a woodwind could just pop over to brass that quickly is an insult to the hard work musicians put in, for years, to develop their skills. It takes a minimum of months on a new instrument just to become vaguely musical at simple stuff, unless it's a very closely related instrument, like Sax -> Oboe. Even then, months is only good enough to reach vaguely proficient. To challenge people who have been practicing for years, you just can't do it in a short time.

@Fushiginiku well, wouldn't that would explain why Mitsuoka didn't get a seat? She just switched, there's no way she could compete for a seat with the other people who had been doing it for years

The way she did it was wrong. But I kind of get the sentiment of trying to find your own thing in music and not just copying someone else. (Of course she could have done it with the saxophone though.)

@chevan In the amount of time given, a saxophone player picking up a brass instrument for the first time shouldn't have been able to play much more than 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.... very slowly. The two instruments are almost completely alien to each other. Except for breath control and the ability to read music, she was starting literally from scratch. The implication in this was that she was able to deliver some sort of credible performance, and, as a musician, I'm pretty offended by it. It completely disses the amount of time I put into mastering my instruments.

To put it simply, the real world definition of "Talent" is ... hundreds or thousands of hours of practice.

Damn, makes me remember my days back in orchestra. Not nearly as dramatic, but still.

It speaks to the strength of the writing that I can't stand Subaru-sensei and at the same time I'm compelled to learn what the hell happened to her to cause her to turn out like this.
