Shiota-sensei to Amai-chan - Vol. 2 Ch. 18 - Sigh

This chapter was great but I'm a little sad there was no conclusion on the whole quiz thing ?

The proverb translation was fine, just an addendum: the original proverb doesn't mention loquats (only chestnuts, peaches, and persimmons: 「桃栗三年、柿八年」). The addition of loquats to his version is Shiota-sensei either trying to be clever, or pulling Amai's leg.

@freakofnature From what I gathered looking the proverb up, 枇杷は九年でなりかねる is one of the various phrases that follows. Think it depends on where in Japan we're talking as well.

You're absolutely right. I believe the short version (mentioning only peaches, chestnuts, persimmons) is the original proverb -- proverbs tend to be pithy. But there sure are a lot of versions, probably regional variations. Some of the variations I found with a little googling do, in fact, mention loquats, and some (as in Shiota-sensei's side remark, outside the speech bubble) mention yuzu.

So perhaps he really was quoting from a variation on the proverb, and not just having fun at Amai's expense.

This series really has such a nice pace and atmosphere, I feel like I even learned something interesting like that proverb and the tradition to leave one fruit on the tree... Love it.

if the implication is he's going to wait nine years to have her, fuck that shit what's wrong with you don't ruin this. literally zero reason to not marry her when she graduates
