It seems like it only (or maybe only sometimes) shows up on the homepage when there's no other text in the post, i.e. it's just the image. That, or gifs aren't able to appear on the homepage.

I'll test it in a minute (by putting one word of text before an image).

As an example of how to format it, it looks like this:
