No matter what they did, Ishima killing them wasn't what to be called right. Understandable, but not right. By human society standard.
However, he did admit to it and made himself an example so people won't justify murder with rage of a loved one being hurt. This is his right decision and is a good one.
His niece might have understood that and tried her best to repay what he did for her. That's the most heart warming thing in all of this.
