I'm surprised the mangaka didn't go with the more obvious test to prove that this is no ordinary 11-year-old Japanese school girl: test her on kanji. From what I understand, 5th grade/elementary school kids are just starting to get the handle on kanji and learning the basic ones. A Japanese woman with ~30 years of experience with kanji would be able to write and read kanji more advanced than what even high schoolers (and most college students, really, if quizzes on kanji on Youtube are any indication) know. It'd be like an 11-year-old being about to do advanced mathematics or write a term paper at the college level. Not earthly reason for that to suddenly happen without build-up to it.

Also worth noting is how the mangaka (Yanagida Fumita) that is currently doing "Tomo-chan" also did hentai doujin which featured a middle school girl getting hooked on drugs by her abusive older boyfriend, getting gang raped and then dumped off after she overdosed and then ends up getting quasi-raped and into a relationship with her brother. (For those interested it's "Gotsugou Soukan"- /102597/) Surprisingly, it also has a somewhat good ending in the other works by him and eventually she gets better. He also has another work called "Kimi o Taosu to Kokoro ni Kimeta!!"(/108580/) which is wholesome and vanilla AF and features a delinquent girl that fell in love with her target of bullying and the tables getting reversed - seriously read it, it's pretty heart-warming.

So, yeah, it's not that odd.

I agree that a kanji test would've been pretty definitive. The only thing I can think of is that, any one thing can be studied for. But a broad, general knowledge of pop culture ranging a number of years in the distant past would pretty much require that person to live through that era.
