saying "but (nickname) is still '(nickname)' right?" is a perfectly realistic thing to say in english between two friends because that nickname will have obvious connotations that are being communicated. if anything, i prefer the ambiguous writing style more, but i get that translators have a to strike a balance for their audience, so it's really fine this way too
