True, I suppose it's not meant to be a battle of wits, and not everything in life has a neat, witty answer that wraps everything up in a nice bow. If I were put in this situation, I would strive for zen - to simply be in the moment and choose. I am not a blank canvas, no one is, and I would not try to pretend otherwise - I would strive to simply follow whatever speaks to me.
