In November 2011 the toast sandwich was recreated by the Royal Society of Chemistry in a tasting almost 150 years after the release of Beeton's Book of Household Management.[4] The society sought to revive the forgotten dish in wake of the Great Recession after calculating the cost as low as 7.5p per sandwich.[5] They named it "the country's most economical lunch", offering £200 to whoever could create a cheaper meal.[6] Due to an overabundance of submissions the offer was closed 7 days later, and the £200 given to a randomly selected entrant.[7]

I ate simple buttered toast as a fast snack a few days ago. Now I have to try that.

EDIT 05/12/2019:
So, I toasted me some toast and put one slice in between two slices of un-toasted toast-bread. But right before building the stack, I drowned the still warm middle slice in butter and salted it...really well. It didn't taste as boring as I assumed. The molten butter really helped to keep the sandwich on the "not too dry" side and the taste and texture was different enough, so it didn't became too boring. It was...fine, yet really not bad.

Well im glad you guys feel somewhat warm feeling in this chapter. But as someone who once ate only bread+margarin for dinner for weeks this makes me remember something awful.
