@Heimdal Hardly any guessing needed anymore. He sent Shirayuki away to gain recognition, fame, and connections so that she would have some standing to be beside a royal prince. I suppose as a king he could have allowed the marriage even without such things, but this is far better for two reasons: It's extremely good for Shirayuki's own career (that's basically her first priority anyway, with Zen coming as a distant second) and one the other hand, if she's a well known person throughout the kingdom, nobles and other important people won't so quickly look down on her. It would be sad for her to be a prince's wife if people were all the time whispering she's a nobody who somehow seduced a prince.

@Kaarme Oh I know he sent her away to build prestige and backing from nobles so that nobles and others couldn't greatly object to her marrying Zen. I've said as much in other forums. Though I think the author wasted a chance at some great story telling having her moved out of the castle right after moving in. It nas been through more of he is tolerating there relationship and Zen wanting to marry her. So he gave her task to test her and for her to raise her standing to be a somewhat fitting bride for Zen politically. Though with this it shows he is now actively in favor of Zen marrying her.

@Heimdal How things went suits Izana's personality. He has that trait with schemes and plots. I'd say he's sort of living through Zen by wanting Zen to be free and happy since he himself is locked to the stiff role of a king, albeit it seems like he did get a good wife, at least, not some evil witch. However, it doesn't exactly suit Izana's personality to show any of that. He would rather appear cold and calculating, making Zen and Shirayuki initially be worried and all that stuff. In the end Izana is genuinely thinking what's best for the kingdom as well, so if a foreign commoner is going to marry a prince, he might as well make sure the commoner will greatly benefit the country since she has the talent for it. This was his way of motivating them.
