He's not forced to summon his Shadows because of rank issues, he's forced because he also has to defend (or carry, in this case) his lower-ranked party.

I mean, the dude solo'd Cerberus in the Hell-level Difficulty dungeon before, so he doesn't really need the Shadows if he were facing the Orc Horde alone. But he's not, so he needs his army to keep the horde from wiping the rest of the party while he tanks the boss.
