So I was partially right.

There was no confession and Tanaka's reason was because he doesn't feel like he's worthy of confessing properly unless he wins in a fair Shogi match. The only thing I was wrong with was that I thought Tanaka would've lost and I was wrong, although Tanaka doesn't seem to count that as a win.
