I never understood what's embarrassing about stomach growling.

Probably a culture thing, the Japanese tend to prefer to be as quiet and polite as possible especially in public. Stuff like blowing your nose in public is completely taboo, if you have a runny nose you better just keep sniffling that shit because if you blow your nose you might just give some old lady a heart attack.
