I love the author's writing style, it's repetitive and gives a feeling of no progression, but there is definitely progression here, just really slow and that's how, at least I feel like, relationships progress... of course, sometimes something monumental happens and everything changes, but here we see pretty much nothing huge happening between them and them still being remarkably closer than at the beginning
