@sarshi Probably the same reason the U.S. is constantly training Middle Eastern troops, you're basically getting a "free" military base in a region you don't control, without having to worry about the local government stabbing you in the back while the deal is in effect. Plus with the supplies and training you're getting additional soldiers to throw at whatever enemies you're camping.

The content of the letter didn't matter at all (otherwise it would have been shown to reader this chapter, as leaving it as a cliffhanger is bad writing), so somehow the fact they got a spy sending them letters at all combined with the fact that the ambassador knows this, is why they fund their army? This just sounds stupid. I almost believe that it was, in fact, just a really poor cliffhanger instead.

I do enjoy this but my inner geopolitical side kicks in and this Nation looks like it could be unstable in the medieval/renaissance periods while completely collapsing and annexed by the neighboring countries in the late industrial or early modern age(Atomic and Information do not count). On the left side there are traditionalists who would be overthrown like the French Revolution and in the other a Militaristic Empire which die off fast. The current kingdom would either be separated as east to west or nonexistent, this type of country would starve from a lot until Globalization, this is virtually a 3rd world nation.
