the only part that breaks the suspension of disbelief here is the fact that almost NOBODY recognizes Frieren, specially town mayors and other head figures;
"but it's been a long time"
people know she's an elf, and know she'd still be around, there is absolutely no reason for her to not be one of the most famous and prominent figures in the whole world

I think a number of people throughout the manga have recognized Frieren before, but not said anything. Like the dude who said "You bear an uncanny resemblance to the statue of the elf, Frieren-sama". He definitely knew. But these being old people, they are wise and patient enough to wait for Frieren to reveal herself, and let her be unrecognized if she prefers. Even the "brat who flipped up my skirt" with the straw hat never said a word until Frieren recognized him.
Graf Granat's town probably doesn't have one of those group statues Himmel was so fond of, for whatever reason. Maybe they had one once, but it got lost somehow. We've already seen that not every place treated their statues with the same degree of reverence, and thus would have forgotten about Frieren's appearance more quickly. It's been 80 years. Would you be able to recognize a World War II hero on sight?

1) you're a governor/ politician/ king
2) if it's an elf who never ages
knowing the mage who did a literal 'save the world' mission, recognized by the king, is such a basic concept to pass on for generations

this manga is good, but it slips here

@havelmom , even a demon who fought Frieren, the elf who killed the most demons and almost killed him, didn't recognize her at first, what you spect of humans who know her only as a tale?
And how many times the others members of the hero party have been mentioned? Is always hero this, hero that , hero saved us but almost no recognition to the rest of the party.

@Xical don't we know that the Frieren party was a more successful one? Since they killed the demon King which other ones weren't able to.
You can excuse demons not remembering her due to their biology being too different from humans (so their memory works differently) but no realistic human leader worth their salt would let their lines forget Frieren for atleast a few generations.
It doesn't make sense not to be informed on who is probably publicly acknowledged as one of, if not THE greatest mages of their time.

Rereading this series is really rewarding. I had completely forgotten that Fern's introductory chapter actually mentioned that her magic signature is extremely difficult to detect, to the point that even Frieren had to look for her the hard way. That was Chekhov's Gun at work.

@Docobonbon Agree'd. It'd make sense to use the hero party as propaganda aswell, especially in magical schools, normal schools and for the mustering grounds.
