That seems to be a classic trope of Chinese storytelling: pining for a girl you barely know/just met. It's very Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet), unrealistic, and kinda lame. I'm not saying he has to be in love with Yuning, or he has to not care about Xueyun, but to talk about love for her is ridiculous, and feels shallow.

Even more common in Chinese/Korean novels is that if the girl wants you, you don't want her. You want the one who doesn't openly desire you/actually hates you. And is typically soft and demure and submissive.

I think it would've been possible for him to fall in love with Yuning if it hadn't been for how forceful she was during the time when he was trying to escape with his sworn brother. His opinion of her at that time DID truly change.
