I think you guys aren't taking into account usual MC denseness and the situational ambiguity of conversational Japanese (that thing authors abuse the absolute shit out of so confessions fall on deaf ears in those romcoms where someone actually manages to nut up and confess before the grand finale but the author thinks writing about an actual couple isn't possible for some reason so they have to delay however they can). This guy is asking if he's MC's ideal type of man, and the MC is totally not understanding that he means it that way, then answers based on his friend he was already shown to be sort of envious of.
