The author could've used the setting that he's from a Roman-like society since the protagonist was not a Japanese before reincarnation but something like European. They had baths too as far as Londinium, and before Rome became Christian, mixed bathing was common. Only in the reign of Hadrian, did segregated bathing started to happen again. So story-wise, it could be that the idea of segregated bathing was never thought of in his society.
