The discussion of the era and its literature in this states that it is known as the earliest Japanese story. I suspect that the translator had to deal with a word like monogatari, which is like a genre. There are plenty of written stories before monogatari were popular. But this is one early monogatari we can still enjoy today. Many have not survived.

@hachimaaan That description of a classic story is really unintelligent and can only be thought of by immature people that don't have anything inside their heads beside sex. Not everything has to be reduced to sex aspect. . In folk tales, fairy tales and mythology, beautiful and talented princesses always have many suitors, some want to marry them because of admiration or they want a worthy wife of their positions.
