It's obviously buried. How he didn't even think of that possibility before looking for it baffles me.

Because it wasn't buried in the first timeline.

I don't remember finding the palace to be difficult in the novel, it was just unexpectedly in ruins and empty. But it's been a while, I may remember wrong.
 
@AlmondMagnum The point is that any person with a single brain cell would suspect something to be buried in a desert. How it was beforehand doesn't matter. He's arriving to it at a different time and timeline.
 
Basically, it was there on where Nie Li lost her wife and he wanders around desert after her loss. After he wanders long enough to see more people died on desert, he found that palace which it should not be there in his current timeline. So I suspect that palace was there either after some times passed or someone build there to keep his secrets to make sure nobody found it easily in that desert.
 
Man, it was just ruins in the novel... no explanation of "how long" did they move until they found it. So for me it's ok this adaptation.
