If he's a general, you'd think he would receive a rather nice and steady pay. Surely he's not supposed to gain all of his income from looting. Possibly there might be a condition he won't receive personal money until they have seen solid results from him as a general. Kind of demeaning, especially with his previous achievements, but if a big battle is imminent, I guess it could fly, considering he has got no official background to his name.
