I remembered a manga with a similar background, people living in a giant tower with a hole in the middle, the higher you lived the higher your status, the MC fell or jumped(unsure) in the hole and discovered there it was a bottom and people were saved a *splat* from who lived there and then had to start a new life...can't remember the name of it though.
I think they "executed" criminal or problematic people from throwin them in the abyss.

This is quite fun! It reminds me of things like World's End Umbrella, where the premise isn't exactly unique or sensible, but it opens up basically all possibilities for whatever comes next. A slightly nonsensical adventure.
