Doing good for ones survival, there's nothing wrong with that.
He's no longer doing that though, now he's doing good to knowingly exploit those who he saved.
To them he's different to all the other nobles, but in reality he's exactly like them. He just discovered that it's a lot easier to do so with goodwill rather than treating them like shit.
