The kids are very obviously not normal kids and my assumption is that they are hybrids who the researchers are trying to humanise. In that case those might really be the babies.

The baby reaction was cute even if they are horrors from beyond the veil.

Yeah! I think the man-eaters are all literal monsters born and raised here and then they release them eventually? Maybe the illness thats affecting the bedridden kid is the transformation. Also engineer kid has psychic powers since he nosebled by stopping the fit kid from dying from his tumble.
