Mesothelioma compensation ads used to be so common here in the 80s & 90s that I didn't even stop to think of the other reason someone might not know what it is - I'm assuming it's just a very American thing, due to how our laws work. Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor caused by asbestos, so when laws were passed to outlaw asbestos use law firms all over the country rushed out to bring class action lawsuits against companies that used asbestos. Part of that was blasting constant ads on tv inviting people who were potentially exposed to take part in the lawsuit. The reason being that the more people who took part, the less each individual would win from any settlement, while lawyers would get paid enormous fees based on the number of people they were representing. Easy money for the lawyers. And asbestos cases were some of the earliest compensation cases won.

And now looking it up ... turns out law firms are still doing those ads and cases to this day.
