I have to say, i'm not a fan of weird internet lingo being used in tls unless it's actually the original intention. i don't keep up on things like that so it's kind of a pain for me. also looks dumb, imo

Yeah I am also not at all a fan of bringing "trending" internet lingo like simp into the translations. Not only is it highly transient (somebody reading this in a year might have never heard the term - even now many will still not know it), it looks dumb. Reminds me of watching twitch streams with high viewer counts where everything in chat is just dumb copy pasta, kekw and pepelaugh. It can have its place when actually portraying a character that talks that way, but in an otherwise normal conversation like the one here it's a foreign object and feels downright wrong.
Aside from that, fun chapter featuring my favourite girl, so thanks for that.

No idea which ghetto highschools you frequent, but I doubt that it is usual language in this Japanese school. And even if it was - we're talking about a written medium here - the vocabulary cannot just use the currently trending vocabulary / memes because half a year later it will be old stuff and forgotten / never heard of by many.
And no, it does not convey the meaning closely at all. A bunch of more-or-less secret admirers and a simp are completely different things. Nothing so far suggests that they are "simping" on the girls.

As someone who's done linguistic studies, I can validate what Pandawanka says to some extent. If the word and its use endures, then even if it is slang, it'll make its way into dictionnaries. =/ That's how language develops. Now, for the sake of argumentation here, in a manga, a translation on top of that, I am somewhat of your opinion that words should reflect the intention as much as possible. A compromise can however be reached since this is not an official translation but a fan one.

Yeah no that is just nonsense. It's not even frequent lingo... it's gonna go the same way 99.9% of all other internet insults go and be used for at most half a year before being forgotten and having to be looked up on Urban Dictionary or KnowYourMeme.
As a translator you simply don't use such stuff except, as I said, when it is actually part of the characterisation. In manga, this can mostly be seen in gyarus or net gaming-related characters who will be all "lul" and "omg" - which in that case is fitting because not only are those terms way better known and more likely to stay for longer, it befits the character. In this dialogue however, the sudden appearence of simp was a foreign object and unfitting.

As a translator: yes language is ever-evolving and changing. But no, that does not at all mean that every single dumbass flavour-of-the-month word becomes a part of a language's vocabulary. The vast majority is never used by more than a small group, and disappears as quickly as it appears. Go to Urban dictionary, flip through the entries, and then think about how many of those you've never heard / never heard in the context it was being used. Hell, I could take last years edition of the youth vocabulary dictionary (something that actually exists where I am from) and go to a highschool class, show it around and I bet you that at least two thirds of the entries will be something nobody in class will ever have heard and sound strange and dumb to them. I know it, because I've done that before. And we're talking about a language that is way more regionally contained than English and thus should have way less variety in trending vocabulary.

Like most expressions, if it ever escapes the confines of "slang" and makes it into the mainstream (being popularized will do that) then it will have a spot in that culture's language. Most of them, like you underlined, are "trends" and will fade into oblivion once the trend passes. So we'll see. I'm leaning towards your side of the argument, btw. Still, when you're in my domain, you don't trivialize everything you come across. ^^'
